Nobody really likes the idea of getting old, and now a new survey reveals what people fear most getting up there in age.

A survey of Americans over the age of 40 finds:

  • The average American first starts to feel old at age 47.
  • They start worrying about the effects of aging when they hit 50.
  • 65% say getting older is the thing they fear most about aging.
  • Decline of physical function or abilities is the biggest age-related worry for most people, followed by:
    • Decline in cognitive function (49%)
    • Losing my edge (25%)
    • Decline in appearance or attractiveness (26%)
    • Decline in energy and overall mood (24%)
    • Losing loved ones (18%)

Of course, not everything about aging is bad.

  • The thing people most look forward to about aging is being able to relax and sped more time with family (49%).
  • Other things they look forward to include:
    • Starting my second act (38%)
    • Retiring and traveling more (34%)
    • Being more advanced in my career (28%)
