Keeping kids interested and involved during school has always been a challenge for teachers, but with remote learning, it’s even tougher. That’s why some educators are getting creative to keep their students engaged by putting stickers all over their faces. Middle school math teacher Diane Moon tried it with her students after a colleague showed her a TikTok of another teacher doing it and she says it has encouraged kids to participate more.
Moon made it a competition between her classes, telling them every time someone new spoke up in class, she’d add a sticker and the class who has the most wins. She says she heard from students who hadn’t spoken out all semester and even saw them coming together to encourage classmates to speak up, saying things like, “It’s okay if the answer is wrong.” Inspired by the success, Moon shared a video of her face covered in stickers and shared it on Twitter, where it’s gone viral.
Fifth-grade teacher Krista Coletti tried it with her students and says she immediately heard from kds she doesn’t normally hear from, plus she noticed they seem to absorb the lesson better the more they get engaged. And the stickers aren’t just working for young kids, Emory University psychology professor Arber Tasimi saw the sticker idea on Twitter and has been using it on his undergraduate students. He says, “The broader lesson is to step outside the box and be creative, and also share your creativity with others.”
