A lot of thought goes into picking the perfect baby name, which is why one woman wasn’t about to let her sister steal her carefully thought out moniker for her child.

A woman shares on Reddit that she came up with a first and middle name for her potential daughter years ago, because it has great meaning to her. The first name was chosen for a friend who passed away, while the middle name represented an important event in her life.

The woman writes that before she became pregnant she told her sister the name, who noted she liked the way it sounded. While it was never talked of again, five months ago her sister gave birth and, you guessed it, gave her daughter the exact name.

The OP admits she was “a little annoyed” but instead of making a case of it, she decided it “wasn’t going to let it stop me from using the name” and when she gave birth a few months ago she used the same name for the child. Not only do the two cousins have the same first and middle name, since both sisters used their maiden name they have the same last name as well.

Of course the sister didn’t take it as well as the OP and is now “annoyed” and thinks it’s “weird” that the OP used the same name. “I told her I wasn’t going to change the name I had wanted for a long time, that had a deep meaning for me, just because she decided to use it after I told her the name,” she writes. “She said as the first one to have a baby she got dibs. I told her to get over it and it was a name anyone could use.”

  • The OP then asked folks on Reddit whether she was wrong, and pretty much everyone agreed it was the sister who was at fault.
    • “She’s the a**hole on this,” one person noted. “In fact she’s a double the a**hole, once for using the name you told her, twice for giving you s*** and saying she named first so she had dibs.”
    • Another added, “Who the hell calls ‘dibs’ on a name they stole from someone else??”
