Nobody really likes the idea of getting old, and now a new survey reveals what people fear most getting up there in age.
A survey of Americans over the age of 40 finds:
- The average American first starts to feel old at age 47.
- They start worrying about the effects of aging when they hit 50.
- 65% say getting older is the thing they fear most about aging.
- Decline of physical function or abilities is the biggest age-related worry for most people, followed by:
- Decline in cognitive function (49%)
- Losing my edge (25%)
- Decline in appearance or attractiveness (26%)
- Decline in energy and overall mood (24%)
- Losing loved ones (18%)
Of course, not everything about aging is bad.
- The thing people most look forward to about aging is being able to relax and sped more time with family (49%).
- Other things they look forward to include:
- Starting my second act (38%)
- Retiring and traveling more (34%)
- Being more advanced in my career (28%)
