Nebraska football added a big piece from the transfer portal as Marques Watson-Trent, a linebacker who earned Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year honors this year at Georgia Southern, has committed to transfer to the Huskers. Watson-Trent will have one year of eligibility remaining and slots into an inside linebacker spot vacated by the graduation of John Bullock.

Last year for the Eagles, Watson-Trent tallied a team-leading 120 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with four forced fumbles. Watson-Trent had six double-digit tackle games, including 10 in the New Orleans Bowl against Sam Houston. Watson-Trent has been been named first-team All-Sun Belt the last two years after earning second team honors as a sophomore in 2022.

He’s also no stranger to Memorial Stadium. As a sophomore in 2022, Watson-Trent had his first 10-tackle game as part of Georgia Southern’s 45-42 upset win over Nebraska, the final game for head coach Scott Frost. That was after Watson-Trent missed most of the 2021 season with a torn ACL suffered in the season opener.

Watson-Trent, a Pittsburgh native, has already earned his degree.
