The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team opened Big Ten competition in dominant fashion, winning nine of 10 matches to defeat Purdue, 30-6, Friday night in a dual at John Cook Arena.
The Cornhuskers (8-3, 1-0 Big Ten) took the drama out of the dual early, with five straight wins, capped by four bonus-point wins. After Alan Koehler won by decision at 125 pounds, No. 8 Jacob Van Dee dominated Blake Boarman at 133 pounds, winning by major decision, 13-2. No. 3 Brock Hardy followed at 141 pounds with a second-period pin of Victor Paino, pushing Nebraska’s lead in the dual to 13-0. No. 11 Chance Lamer throttled No. 21 Gavin Brown at 149 pounds, winning by major decision, 12-2. No. 5 Antrell Taylor followed at 157 pounds with a first-period pin of No. 19 Stoney Buell, building the Huskers’ lead to 25-0.
After the Boilermakers (7-2, 0-1 Big Ten) won by decision at 165 pounds, Nebraska closed the dual with four straight wins. At 174 pounds, No. 6 Christopher Minto earned a hard-fought 11-8 decision over No. 16 Brody Baumann. No. 9 Silas Allred also defeated a ranked foe at 184 pounds, topping No. 25 James Rowley, 4-1. After No. 12 Camden McDanel defeated No. 23 Ben Vanadia at 197 pounds, 7-1, heavyweight A.J. Ferrari finished the dual in resounding fashion, beating Hayden Filipovich by major decision, 11-2.
Nebraska returns to action Jan. 16, wrestling at Minnesota. The dual begins at 8 p.m.
